Compliments register, “They’re talking about somebody else but thank you.”

Hate registers, “I know you’re talking about me but you’re wrong! AND I can be even better than this!” (Then why do you have to shout?) He knows he doesn’t believe his own words, but it helps to pretend.

Everybody walks out of the room. He sets the masks down. All of them. Steps back into himself.
