The Way Home

She’s standing, lost
in the middle of the street.
I’ve seen that expression on a face before.
I know what it means.

She just wants to go home
-wherever that is.

She wants to be at the place
where no one needs proof of life
-proof that, before them, stands a valid
human being.
She wants to be at the cornerstone of acceptance,
at the root of familiarity,
at the people, the person whose food
always tastes better than her own
because that food belongs to that person.

But she has searched, and searched,
and searched.
She can’t find it anywhere, in anyone
and is sure she doesn’t have what it takes
to be it.

So she stands, lost
in the middle of the street,
amongst a hundred passersby.
