Mores

It’s always the same people in the TV shows. The doting mother. The charismatic playboy. The single woman looking for the perfect man with whom to raise perfect kids. The awkward nice guy, constantly bullied for his manners and never preferred over the bad guy. The career-driven woman who ends up with the child she ‘always wanted’.

The norm, the mainstream fantasy on repeat in every storyline in a world that claims to be changing. Endless images of lives we’re supposed to want. Those in the margins may have a louder voice nowadays, but they are still in the margins. Still weird, subtly unwanted. And everyone’s mother still wishes they had raised a doctor complete with loving spouse and 2.1 grandkids.
