Counting Omens

Remember the time
you used to steal glances at me,
your almond eyes quietly presuming
my ungovernable nature?
-yet I wasn’t much of a rebel.
Remember when we were courteous
yet sworn opposites?
Now we talk about back then as if we knew
we’d end up sitting side by side,
my head resting on your shoulder,
counting all the roads that branched out
then converged to bring us to this instance,
picking out all the omens that lit up
when they heard about us,
silently pointing to this future.
