A Jubilant Fear

They fed us something sweet,
a thing that jived on tongues
did back flips down throats
and burgled ribcages.
We stayed still,
feeling its heartbeat merge with ours.
It was a jubilant fear gracing a rite of passage…
…the knot in the stomach representing
a necessary bravery.

We celebrated a night so dense
it muffled the hyena’s mocking laugh.

For we all knew:
The future silently introduced her glory
in the throes of that darkest of nights.
And there we were,
fortunate enough to await a morning
in which we could finally bear witness
to the fruits of midnight’s labour.
